A Map of Europe: overland to and from Russia

THE BEST OVERLAND ROUTES. The best way to get to and from Russia is avoiding Belorussia (Belarus), because everyone needs a transit visa through Belarus, which costs $30 and takes time to make.

On the map above you can see that if you take a direct bus from Germany to Moscow, Russia, it'll go through Belarus. To avoid Belarus, you can take a bus to one of the Baltic countries (e.g. Riga in Latvia, or Tallinn in Estonia), and then change to a bus to Russia.

For example, if your destination is St. Petersburg, you can take a daily Eurolines bus from Berlin to Tallinn (or Riga), and then take a bus from Tallinn (or Riga) to St. Petersburg. The price of this trip will be around $70 one way.
If you take a direct bus Berlin - St. Petersburg, you'll go through Belorussia, it'll cost around $70 one way and you'll need a transit visa (+$30 at least).
If your destination is Moscow, you can also take any daily bus to one of the Baltic countries (for example, Berlin - Riga, around $50 one way), and then a daily train or bus (departs on mondays) from Riga to Moscow ($25), or take a bus to St. Petersburg (for example, Tallin - St. Petersburg takes only 7 hours, and costs $10 one way), and then take one of the many daily trains St. Petersburg - Moscow (see more info on domestic travel at Getting around Russia section).
