IMPORTANT UPDATE: Effective September 8, 2008 the Russian Embassy in Washington DC will no longer process any Visa applications received via regular or overnight mail. CIBT has been selected by the Russian Embassy as an exclusive partner to process mailed visa applications. Simply follow the instructions below and mail your completed application to CIBT for regular or expedited visas to Russia. Applications can no longer be mailed directly to the Embassy.

What is going on here? Now we have to go through a 3rd party to get a visa application processed because the embassy will no longer accept mailed applications?! This really pisses me off Evil or Very Mad. Now I have to pay 3 people a fee just to get my application processed.

If it makes you feel any better (probably won't) both the US and UK embassies in Moscow require courier service for visa applications as well.

I have no idea why.

It sounds like the typical tit-for-tat that has gone on for several years. When the US required a longer application form and increased fees for Russians applying for a US visas, Russia quickly did the same for US applicants for Russian Visas.

Last year I got a visa to Russia from the Embassy in Ottawa in a week. Now it takes 15 working days - no fast service is possible according to their web site Sad I wonder why. I didn't realise Canada stepped on Russian toes - in hockey perhaps, but as far as visas are concerned???

Nyet. Don't think so. Something else must be going on Sad

There is an agency called Visaconnections that will expedite a visa.
But the Russians should have a right to complain to be treated like criminal.
BTW Canada is even stringent, because of our BS landed immigrant and refugee laws. So many come here and state that they are only visiting, but then head for the local church basement and declare themselves a refugee. I know many great people who want to visit from Russia and Ukraine, but some schmore decides to claim refugee status and stay here while his case get heard while others who follow the process get punished. If I see Jack Layton come to my house, I will kick him in his socialist nut sack.

What will that do to make us get visas to Russia faster?

Layton's NDP won't form the next Canadian government no matter what you do to him - not even castration of Layton would help. Just wondering...

Yes, I'm having to go through CIBT now for my visa. Also note that the application form has changed, so you can't just update a previous one with the new dates.

The other consulates are slow updating their web pages, but I believe this applies to all the consulates in the US.
