from the wikipedia article It seems Belorus and Kazakhstan have shown strong intrest in forming a new union, but Russia has blown them off. Are they insane???? The last president said the collapse of the CCCP was the worst thing to happen, why not try to rectify this? Are the top guys so nationalist? Afraid of dillusion of their personal power? But they need the populations. At least unify the armies. Why let it turn into a missed opportunity? Could US pressure be holding them back? Eurasian Union would be good for everyone, right?. I lose sleep over this puzzle.

Perhaps Russia is reluctant to make United State (interesting that abbreviature will be same as U.S.) because of past expirience? The only state that going well is Belarussia. Others are went to the poverty, economical crisises and wars. While Russia itself is relatevely stable (comparing with 1991..2000) years others still have great problems.

But Kazakhstan is doing ok, isn't it? I always hear they will be one of the richest countries in the world some day because of all their natural resources. Anyway, if as you say Belarus is doing ok, why always back out of unity measures with them, like unified customs & currency?
