I believe you cannot go directly from Moscow to Kostrome.
Moscow to Yaroslavl. Yaroslavl to Kostrome. Possibly you cannot to be ticketed all the way through in Moscow. I have run into some very odd ticketing problems on buses and trains in Russia, things that made no sense (I am no longer surprised by such oddities....).
I don't have any links to give you for Russian railways so that you can coordinate trains. And besides such timetables are always in Russian. Just go to Yaroslavl and from there buy the train ticket for Kostrome. |

I have just checked for some dates in October and November. There is a daily train #148 and some days there is a train #044. There are a lot of available tickets for any date.
I checked at the oficial web-site of the Russian Railway agency mza.ru. You may book your ticket on this site if you understand Russian. Actually the name of the station is Кострома-Новая. |
