DITTRICH you gave him good sound reasonable advice. If FFHG wants to argue and blunder forward with his half baked plan, let him. He'll find out. People who dream up these pie-in-the-sky travel ideas for Russia have no idea what they will be dealing with--Russia is not like any other place.
Anything that seems sane and straightforward in the rest of the world will be a huge quagmire in Russia. This country does NOT operate under any kind of rhyme or reason. Government is utterly corrupt. Foreign travelers are NOT catererd to and will be he'll given the run around and then ripped off.
Leave him be and let him find out for himself.

Where?
Certainly not in the two articles I read.
You must be halucinating, or reading between the lines.
Or are you referring to other unfounded opinions given by imaginative speculators.
There really was a reason I added the last two lines to my original post. |

Well my holiday has begun. So until I begin my journey I really enjoy WTR and all its members
What are facts and what is based on assupotions? I'd really like to know.
I'd like to hear from anyone who RECENTLY entered Russia by car.
What are the obstacles etc. ?
-And, YES, I am reading various articles here and other places on the internet... |

Dear Din Din
Its difficult to give you exact advice and the reason is this - all border crossings are not 'created equal' - some are 'more equal' than others! Rules are applied differently, change frequently and depend on the moods of the officials involved. I can pretty well predict that no-one has done what you are now doing. My only suggestion is to let us know the exact border crossing and/or search for information on. If you can't see the site from china, say so, I will search this evening and post any information - www.horizonsunlimited.com
The basics are the same everywhere (as on the website), though the temporary import certificate may be valid for differing periods of time - based on my experience and on others. Technically not having a valid t.i.c. can result in the car being confiscated but I've never been brave enough to try this out.
REMEMBER TO GET A MIGRATION CARD ON ENTRY TO RUSSIA- SEE EXAMPLE ON THE WEBSITE - YOU NEED ONE AT ALL COSTS - WHEN YOU CROSS THE BORDER. AIRPORTS ARE GOOD AT GIVING THESE OUT BUT BORDER CROSSINGS WHO KNOWS.
REMEMBER TO BUY RUSSIAN 3RD PARTY INSURANCE BEFORE DRIVING OFF/ ENTERING RUSSIA.
Provided you have...
Passport, visa, migration card, russian 3rd party insurance, vehicle registration papers (originals), t.i.c. (vremmeni vvosd),chinese driving license (with notarised translation), idp (ideally but not vital even though legally required). Make copies of these and show these to people rather than handing over your originals.
Good Luck

| I wonder how these people got on? The one thing I must say about taking a car into Russia if you are not Russian is plan to leave with the car as well , while technically possible to sell a foriegn car in Russia (with a lot of time , effort and paperwork) you will not gain financially by it and is generally more hassle than its worth , the easiest way to drive across Russia in a foriegn car it to take it with you when you leave (assuming it survives) |
