I came into this talk lounge from the "myths and truths" page, and frankly was amazed at everyone giving the moderator a hard time about racism in Russia.
I live in Canada (an area that was widely settled 100 years ago about Russians and Ukrainians, hence my interest).
EVERY story about racists, bigotry, prejudiced attitudes that the commentators (most of them Americans no doubt) have about Russia, is virtually identical to what people in Canada say about the United States of America. americans themselves often tell this about the US, but never mention the examples of good racial relations.
And the U.S. media focuses on America's racist history and current racial problems as well.
Are all Americans bigots? Of course not. Should non-whites avoid the US? No.
So, I'm sure the same is true of Russia. |

Just read the report of Amnesty International about racism in Russia, it is very scary. |

Yeah, there was always that famous Georgian, what was his name..? Oh yes, Stalin.
Russians still worship Georgians to this day. The whole world thinks Russia's stance against Georgia is bullshit and Georgia still as a country is telling Russia to bring it on.
Guess who looks the coward in all of this? |

| One can be a Georgian, live in a major Russian city and experience no racism. However, it's quite common for people who look like they came from the Southern regions of the former Soviet Union to hear racist or deragotory remarks and experience some form of racism there. That's a sad reality and is not even closely comparable to the situation in the US. |

| We have racism in the US big time...went into the auto parts store and I was the only white person in a mexican neigborhood...did I get service? Not right away. We have lots of racism here...in fact the hate crimes that happened in louville a few months ago was really horrible...blacks burned a young couple after raping them...set him on fire...lopped off her breasts..etc etc. The USA has pretty bad racism...but as I am sure the case is in Russia and world wide...the norm is tolerance and acceptance. |

| Maybe if you would have thought to scream LA MIGRA, LA MIGRA ,as soon as you entered the store, you would have gotten service right away. You have some lessons to learn son. I could tell you some tales.........but I wont because thats neither here nor there. |

Yeah...I am thinking of three letters: K...K...K.
Oh wait, thats one letter, three times. Now why would I think of that?
Now I am thinking of a Nation of Islam.
Weird. |

I know personally three people who are Georgians and two who just look like people from Caucasus when they aren't shaved. Georgians - no reaction at all. Caucasian like - almost unnoticed in small cities and stopped for paper checks slightly often in big cities like Moscow or S.Pb. If you want to go walk around looking like Georgian most likely nothing will happen. |

Replying to comments that are two years old. I see that you are bored.
I was in Moscow and wore a Georgian Rugby Jersey and went to a restaurant. I generally was avoided and not served. When to the hotel room, I changed into a Canadian Jersey, went to the same restaurants and was served right away.
But it was at the same time as Georgia was accusing Russia of spying and held bunch of their people prisoner so it could be a little reaction for this moment.
Ender, I think I posted something about 4 years, you can comment on that also. |

It looks very funny as waiters usually don't read what is written on the dress. I look 100% Russian, tall and large guy but sometimes in a restaurant I'm completely unnoticed by the waiter. When I go to same restaurant again things are different. My younger brother worked as a waiter for 1.5 years. He was very well trained and he was earning relatively good money. He told me many stories about this business. It is funny when someone from "another side" explains to you how it works.

You are right and wrong.
Small stuff, but if you walk in the American bar with with Big Blue Footbal shirt with Russia written on it. Same as if you see a shirt that has stars and stripes, then you think American.
Are they racist? I am not sure. I will explain this way. I think if you are wearing a jersey from a foreign nation, you will look like you are trying to promote this nation and its politics. At this time, there was problems between these nations.
Before you think it, Russia does not sell Rugby jerseys. I have been trying to get one since 2003. Friend of mine bought me a scarf.
The Russian club is doing awesome (as well as the Georgians). My estimate is Russia will be in the top 12 nations in 4 years which is amazing where they used to me. They are passing my nation, because of their hard word and great play. Still looking for a jersey.
Cheers |

I'm not sure if I correctly understood you but I have seen people wearing a shirt with stars and stripes or like american military uniform multiple times. Nobody think that they are Americans or promote something American. Of course doing same defile in MARPAT painted stuff or something like this on the main city square on the Day of VDV will be quite provoking.
BTW what happens if I enter an american bar wearing a shirt with "Russia" wrtitten on it? What about a shirt with slavic patterns? Just curious.

I don't think that having jersey from another nation promote its politics. Of course unless it have something disgusting written on it.

I tell you more. Nobody in Russia knows that.
It looks like I have two rugby jerseys. My wife has bought them accidentally. The one exception they aren't contain any writings on them. One is pure black, other is pure yellow. |
