PS. It's to hard to separate Russia and Ukraine. We have common origins. I'm on 25% - ukranian, like great part of russian.
80-90% of ukranians speaks russian
40-50% feels themselves russian
do you know what ancient capital of Russia was Kiev - now it's capital of Ukraine ?
This division (or separation) was made by politics. It's only hurts simple people in both countries. |

An Ukrainian told me this joke about Ukraine/Russia relationships :
An Ukrainian shepherd, standing on top of a hill, shouts over to another Ukrainian on another hill to tell a important new. - Mykola!
- Yes!
- Russians have flown to the Moon!
- All of them?
- No, just one.
- So why are you bothering me?

It was the Capital of Rus, not Russia. Russia did not exist at that time
When Kiev existed, Novgorod started as a major merchant city. When Kiev got sacked and conquered, Novgorod became the capital of Russia. |

Wow, that is the opposite of mentat's view, no? Or did I get the joke incorrectly? It was about the Ukrainian not caring about Russians landing on the moon unless all of them evacuated earth because he hates them?
Anyway, I wonder about Russian song airplay. Can someone give me a rough estimate? For instance, I would say in Italy it's around 60% Italian, 40% International songs. In Manila, it used to be 100% American! But then now it changed to around 35% local, the rest American.
How are Russian tastes in music? Would you say the youth are into "shallow" pop tunes as well? |

If you watch MTV Russia 65-70% foreign (USA) / 30-35% local (Russian).
Local pop-music is really not so developed as world-class. But there are many small music teams producing quality music. Fort some reasons (money?) they not known for public masses, but enjoyed by real music lovers.
PS. Funny joke. Really  Every country have their own nacionalists. Even Russia. |

Russia produces mostly ugly pop-music. (I'm not taking "Via gra" or Plazma). BUT ... Did you heard Russian rock ? It's not the rock music at all. It's sad, but strong music. I think it's really Russian music.

I guessed that the Russian youth is just like any youth in the world. A bit materialistic, into pop trash, emo hair (but like mine, haha), and maybe a bit self-centered. Of course I talk about middle class youths. The "hope" of the generation. Maybe because I am 28, so I feel a bit tired of seeing these kids in the malls with their latest shoes, copying the things they see on MTV. But at some point when I was a young teenager, I was the same way.
I will check out the Russian rock bands you mentioned, it would broaden my tastes a bit. I DID hear this German DJ named Sasha Dith and his 2005 "hit" Russian Girls. It was a bit funny, and the video doesn't take itself too seriously. I don't know how Russians viewed it, but the comments on youtube were funny. Some said just look at the girls, while others began talking about nuclear missiles and all that stuff. It was entertaining, in the least (the comments AND the video). Plus the girls were hot, haha. I don't know if they were really Russian, but the girl singing sounded like she had the Russian accent. Maybe you guys can clarify for me? Let me look up the video.

I've heard the same; that Russians are more into pop and techno (even the young adults aged 20-25) than rock music. I definitely enjoy pop and techno, but usually prefer to listen to it at clubs. the only pop bands I've heard of from Russia have been Dima Bilan and t.A.T.u. any others worth a listen? for the most part, I listen to rock. I've gotten into Leningrad (even though I hear they're largely unquotable b/c of their vulgar lyrics), Zemfira and an American/Ukranian/Russian band called Gogol Bordello, but I'm always looking for new music to listen to. I've listened to some DDT, but I didn't really enjoy them as much as I thought I would. I was told they're like a Russian R.E.M., but I didn't see what the big deal was. Does anyone else have any suggestions as to what to listen to? |
