Hello Dr. Fauste, I am disheartened to hear of your opinions of Russian beers. Are they all really the same? I've never had a Russian beer and it is not available in even our upscale liquor sales establishments. I plan to try some when I am in Russia. Your terminology stimulated a Pavlovian (he was a Russian!) response however. I find myself partial to some of the excellent microbrews as well. My preferences run toward dark, full bodied ales such as Guinness, Young's Double Chocolate Stout, etc. If you open your niche pub in SPB, I will make a trip there to sample the brew. za Vasheh z'darovyeh! my favorite 2 beers ; excluding microbrews of course , are Samuel Adams light & Sierra Nevada pale ale. Bass is ok every now & then, but guiness to me taste like beer flavored syrup, but thats just me.

I had the real budweiser and soome cider, but sadly they were not Russian. Many Russian beers come in plastic containers and they lack the varied and depth yet.
Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada make a good pint, but Dennis you are correct than you have to try the local stuff. I always try the stout that is from Malta. It supposely is darker than Guiness and made out rain water. There is a pub in Washington DC that serves over 1000 different brews from the world Drool

I was able to find one Russian beer in Canada and it was okay. I like drink quality, not quantity.
If you are in Calgary, we have company called Big Rock that makes a fine Irish Ale.

Try Kleenskee or is it Kleenskye, I think its great, beats bud anytime, and a fraction of the price 14r a half litre bottle. Most of the top european beers are overpriced in Moscow like Stella, Guinness etc

its banned to drink alcohol in public, you can still drinking and hide the drink in a bag or whatever.
fine is 500 rubles if they see u drinkin, or u can just pay 25 rubles for the beer for the policeman..

As my name mr.barley implies, I enjoy much beer. I have to agree with Dr. Fauste on the beer quality issue. I spent 3 weeks in Moscow on an international adoption trip a few months back and found the beer barely drinkable.I tried about a dozen different brands and found little that I liked. I didn't mind Baltika number 7 I believe. It was a wheat beer and a good change from all the pilsnerish beer they have.You may as well buy the cheapest because they all pretty bad.Luckiy in our hotel (Ukraina) bar they had Guinness.At 100 rubles a bottle it got a little expensive.But that's about what Guinness would cost where I live to. I actually brew 90% of the beer I drink so I'm a bit fussy when it comes to beer.

As far as drinking beer in public goes, I could care less. I wish I could here in the land of "freedom". I thought it was prety cool except for the girl in Christ the Savior Church with a bottle of vodka in her hand on Christmas Day.Made for a memorable story anyway.

I had some killer Polish beer in a Toronto pub once, I would think that if you can get it in Toronto, there ought to be some Polish beer available in Russia. Sam and Sierra are quite good. For general grocery store beer, Weinhardts pale ale is pretty good. Michelob Amber Boch isn't too bad either. I'd imagine the best beer in the world is probably served in Munich in October though.

Czech beer is awesome. Belgium trappist ales are also great. I love Murphy Red Irish ale.

Sparty, you live in Virginia? There is pint called Mojo that is great!!! Had it Chralottesville Virginia. Lots of cute girls there also.

It is legallybanned now, but in my area it's ignored even now for vodka especially. The police appear take to simply state put it in your pocket, and when they have gone they they take it out out again.

Partying outside is the Russian way, they don't want to pay extotionate prices inside often overpriced clubs or bars, in the western region they have barbeques and beer parties in the nearby forest. That's the Russian way, and what's wrong with it.

So even now it continues, in the city a cool beer is great in the street, as long as your not very drunk. It must be the only city in the world where those wearing executive suits walking along the city road drinking a bottle of beer. If you enjoy it, and you're not bothering anybody, why not?
